The Sound of the City

The sound of the City
With rapidly increasing pace of life we become less and less conscious of our environment, sounds, smells or colours. Daily routes to school or to work are now occasion to wear headphones not to listen to music but to close ourselves in safe virtual spaces where we can be alone with our thoughts.
With my project I wanted to show often overlooked diversity of soundscapes and beauty hidden outside of the heaphones.

The aim of the project was to make people aware of what their city sounds like. However, I did not want the interaction with the object to be intrusive and force the user to listen.

Therefore, I created an object that you have to embrace to hear the sounds hidden inside.
The form of the project draws from totem poles whose carvings symbolized history of the tribes.
In my design I wanted to picture the same values — history and sense of community — with sounds.

This is a student project created at the National College in Dublin during the BA Interaction Design course
